The Other Bill

My take away from the 8th annual LifeScience Alley conference www.lifesciencealley.org was different than years past. Normally, I leave thinking about whose booth had the most impact, the contact from St. Jude I made, or the great folks (from Phillips Plastics) in the booth across the carpet.

This year was different. I was inspired, awakened even, by the luncheon general session lead by Bill Crounse, MD, Senior Director Worldwide Health, Microsoft Corporation. He began his presentation calling himself, "the other Bill from Microsoft."

The topic, "The Impact of IT & the Net on Health and Health Care," normally would have me yawning and texting on my Blackberry, but the-other-Bill got my attention. He revealed that the US falls far behind other developed nations, the UK in particular, in health related IT – and this coming from a Microsoft employee!

To the Rescue: 20 billion of our tax dollars as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act http://www.recovery.gov/Pages/home.aspx will help American healthcare go digital. And is it worth it? Dr. Bill convinced me it is.  I was spellbound when he showed both technology of today and tomorrow. Microsoft Surface (check it out if you haven’t) makes me believe that one day we will no longer talk of which country has more advances, but which global industry is improving the standard of living fastest. (And, that maybe someday, the standard of living will be universal and be reflective of developed nations.)

Upon returning to the office and unloading our tradeshow booth, I was imagining the healthcare-kiosk Dr. Crounse had introduced; mostly, because the very large and heavy container holding the booth landed square on my foot.  In the world Dr. Bill described, I would have gone to my workplace, bellied up to the kiosk, used some high-tech imaging device the size of an i-phone to x-ray my foot. Then, in real-time, a radiologist in India would confirm a bruise or a break, allowing me to make an educated decision on what to do next.  For Dr. Crounse, what to do next is exactly the question we all should be asking.
